ABOUT US

Grey-cheeked Bulbul eating a red berry

The Biji Alam Awards was set up by a group of Malaysian nature lovers and environmental experts who believe that fellow conservationists in the field really need support and believe that there are other Malaysians out there who would like to help too. We decided that it would be a good idea to put them together.

The award scheme is run by an independent Malaysian non-profit organisation registered with the ROS : the Biji Alam Conservation Society, Selangor (Persatuan Konservasi Biji Alam ) registration number: PPM-012-14-06092024

OUR STORY

Biji Alam is the brainchild of Natalie Yong, a Malaysian citizen who lives in Britain, an ex-financier with a lifelong passion for nature. Natalie is a trustee of The Points Family Trust, a UK-based charity, established by her and her husband Jonathan Points and works in the charity sector as an advisor to people in financial difficulties.

Co-founder Teckwyn Lim, Phd, is a senior career conservationist, with special interests in elephants and forests, and an environmental consultant who has an on the ground view of the peril facing Malaysian wildlife and how much the sector needs help. Teckwyn is the managing director of Resource Stewardship Consultants Sdn Bhd (RESCU), a Malaysia-based natural resource consultancy company and lectures part time at the University of Nottingham Malaysia.

We thought carefully about what roles we need to play to make this work and so our committee and members represent a team of experienced professionals that span the disciplines of conservation, media marketing, law and finance.

With senior conservationists on our team and a panel of expert judges to work with, we believe we have the expertise to be able to identify the most effective conservationists that work in our country. This way, donors can be confident that the money they give is going to be used in the best possible way for conservation. In time we hope to create a network of exceptional conservation leaders who will mentor  younger conservationists.
